Community Guidelines

Last updated: April 1, 2026 · Applies to all users of veiliit.app

Veil gives you a mask — not a shield for cruelty. Anonymity on this platform is a privilege designed to encourage honesty and connection, not to enable harm. These guidelines define what that means in practice.

1. Respect Anonymity — Yours and Others'

The entire value of Veil depends on mutual respect for anonymity. You may not attempt to identify, expose, or reveal the real identity of any user without their explicit, in-app consent through the Reveal system. This includes:

  • Sharing screenshots of conversations with the intent to identify or publicly expose another user.
  • Cross-referencing profile information (batch, branch, mood, writing style) with real-world identities outside the app.
  • Pressuring, coercing, or repeatedly asking another user for personal information outside the Reveal system.
  • Posting another person's real name, contact details, or location without their consent (doxxing).

Violations of this rule are treated as the most serious category of offense and will result in an immediate permanent suspension with no right of appeal.

2. Zero Tolerance: Harassment & Hate Speech

Veil maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for targeted harassment and hate speech. A single verified report of the following will result in an immediate, permanent, hardware-level ban with no appeal:

  • Threats of physical harm of any kind — direct or implied.
  • Gender-based abuse, casteist slurs, or communal targeting.
  • Content that incites hatred based on religion, ethnicity, caste, gender, or sexuality.
  • Persistent unsolicited contact after a user has clearly indicated they do not wish to engage.
  • Any content that sexualises minors.

We do not issue warnings for severe violations. If you are reported and the report is verified, your account is terminated immediately.

3. Sexual Content

Explicit sexual content must never be sent to any user without their prior, unambiguous, and ongoing consent. While Veil does not proactively scan message content, users may report violations at any time and those reports are reviewed by a human moderator.

Any content involving the sexualisation of minors will result in immediate account termination and reporting to law enforcement without exception.

Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) — sharing or threatening to share intimate images of any person without their consent — is an immediately bannable offence and will be reported to the relevant authorities.

4. Academic Integrity

Veil must not be used to facilitate academic dishonesty. IIT Kanpur's Academic Integrity Policy applies to all students, and conduct on Veil that violates it may be reported to the Institute's academic bodies in cases involving serious breaches.

Prohibited academic conduct includes: circulating question papers before or during examinations, coordinating answers during live assessments, and soliciting or providing solutions to graded assignments or projects.

5. Prohibited Content & Behaviour

The following are prohibited on Veil and will result in account action:

  • Hate speech or slurs targeting religion, caste, gender, sexuality, or ethnicity.
  • Doxxing — identifying, exposing, or threatening to expose another user's real identity.
  • Unsolicited explicit or sexual content.
  • Harassment, threats, stalking, or intimidation.
  • Academic dishonesty (sharing exam papers, coordinating answers).
  • Distributing, soliciting, or facilitating access to controlled substances.
  • Sharing non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII).
  • Impersonating faculty, institute staff, or other students.
  • Spam, phishing links, or distributing malware.
  • Circumventing a ban by creating a second account.

6. Enforcement & Penalties

Reports are reviewed manually by a human moderator. Penalties are determined by the nature of the violation, evidence quality, and history of prior offences.

Temporary suspensionRepeat violations, moderate offences, or spam.

Permanent bans are not subject to reversal. Warnings and temporary suspensions may be appealed by email within 14 days of the enforcement action (see Section 8).

7. Legal Disclosure

⚠️ Veil is deeply committed to protecting user anonymity. However, this is not an unconditional guarantee. We may be legally required or ethically obligated to disclose user information in the following circumstances:

  • A valid court order, subpoena, or warrant issued by a competent judicial authority under Indian law.
  • A credible, imminent threat of physical harm to a named individual, where law enforcement has been contacted and disclosure is the only reasonable option.
  • Discovery of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which will be reported to law enforcement immediately and without exception.

We will always limit any disclosure to the minimum data required by the specific order or circumstance, and will notify affected users if legally permitted to do so. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
