Delete Your Veil IIT Account
This page explains how to delete your account from the Veil IIT app (Android & web), what data is removed, and how long it takes.
How to delete your account
From inside the app:
- Open Veil IIT and sign in with your IIT email.
- Go to the Profile tab.
- Scroll to the bottom and expand Danger Zone.
- Tap Delete Account.
- (Optional) Tell us why you're leaving, then confirm.
You will be signed out immediately and will receive an email confirming that your account has been scheduled for deletion.
Don't have access to the app?
If you can't sign in (lost device, forgot which email you used, etc.), email us from the address on your Veil account at support@veiliit.app with the subject line "Delete my account". We will verify ownership and process the deletion within 7 business days.
What happens after you request deletion
We use a 7-day grace period to protect against accidental or coerced deletions:
- Day 0 (request): Your account is frozen. You're signed out everywhere. Other users can no longer send you messages, you stop receiving notifications, and you are removed from the buddy-matching pool.
- Days 1–6 (grace period): If you sign in again with the same IIT email during this window, your account is fully restored — all profile data, posts, messages, groups, and connections are intact, exactly as you left them.
- Day 7 (permanent deletion): If you have not signed back in, an automated job permanently and irreversibly deletes all of your data. This action cannot be undone.
What data is deleted
On day 7 we permanently remove all of the following from our database:
- Your profile (fake name, email, batch, branch, gender, mood, bio, avatar)
- Every post, comment, vote, reaction, and poll vote you ever made
- All direct messages and message requests you sent or received
- Group memberships and group messages (campus groups and global IIT groups)
- Reports you filed and your block list
- Buddy queue entries, buddy invites, and recent-match history
- Push notification subscriptions tied to your account
- Ban / warning history
The buddy reveal feature is stateless (60-second Redis TTL) so it holds no persistent data tied to you — there is nothing to delete there.
What data is retained
For legal, security, and abuse-prevention reasons, a very small amount of de-identified data may be retained after deletion:
- Aggregate moderation counts (e.g. "X posts were removed this week" — not linked to you).
- Admin audit-log entries referencing your former user ID, kept for accountability of moderation decisions. These never include your email or any profile content.
- Server access logs kept by our hosting providers (Vercel, Neon) for up to 30 days, per their standard retention policies. These are IP-level and not joined with your account after deletion.
None of the retained data is sufficient to re-identify you.
